First settled around 1807, the city was originally known as Timberlake in honor of William Timberlake, a local physician. After a post office was established here in 1882, the post office and railroad depot in the city were named Erlanger after Baron Frederic Emilie d’Erlanger, a financier who helped finance the city’s early development. Erlanger was incorporated in 1897.

The establishment of I-75 in the 1960s, led to the construction of many subdivisions and industrial areas along the interstate including Erlanger, which led the Greater Cincinnati area in new construction for three years during that decade. Today, the city is just over eight square miles in size and is home to over 18,000 residents. The city also has a thriving business community, led by The United States Playing Card Company, whose corporate headquarters is in Erlanger.

Also known as “Friendship City,” Erlanger is just minutes from downtown Cincinnati and Covington. Additionally, Lexington and Louisville are within a two-hour drive from Erlanger and the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport is located in nearby
Hebron, Kentucky.
